The city of Sciacca

At the flank of Monte Kronio directly on the sea, is situated the city of Sciacca, which has Arabic accords. In fact, it was conquered in the year 840 of the Arabians, and transformed into an important agricultural junction. The origin of the city name, comes from the Arabic, which derives from "xacca" (water). Sciacca is a village on the sea! Each branch of the streets, outgoing from the city centre lead inevitably into the ocean.
When you see the first houses of Sciacca, you will see from the distance the castlle "Castello Luna" built 1380, which is perfect place in the summer for Music and Theatre performances . The historical centre of Sciaccas is full of objects of interest such as the churches: ”San Lorenzo” (1393), “San Agostino” (1743), the “Castello Perollo” (1300), the cathedral with Normans origin and the church of "Santa Margherita" (1342), restored in the 16th century, with its beautiful Renaissance Gothic portal made by Francesco Laurana. At 2km east of Sciacca, in the “ Castello Incantato” thousands of stone heads crowd an olive grove, a bizarre open-air gallery created by a sculptor, who devoted his life to carving the heads of his imaginary enemies up till his death in 1967. The mountain of “San Calogero”, on its top is a Baroque Basilica, accommodates in its interior numerous grottos and caves, where constantly comes out vapors and warm air, which are used for therapeutic purposes since its discovery. Each February, Sciacca invites visitors from all over Italy to the annual Carnival (one of the most famous in all over Italy). Followed by an animated colourful parade with vehicles(waggons) on those are enormous papier-maché figures , the inhabitants and visitor from Sciacca goes dancing and singing through the city center. By strolling through the Centre, one cannot pass the numerous ceramic(s) business shops, without being attracted by the colors and shapes of the exhibited works of art.

The beaches: Capo San Marco; Capo San Giorgio; Lido Sovareto; Lido Stazzone; Lido Tonnara; Lido Colonia; Spiaggia di Timpi Russi und Spiaggia di Lumia.

The city of Caltabellotta

Twenty kilometers from Sciacca, controlling the approaches to the Monti Sicani, Caltbellotta is one of the highest towns in Sicily, over half a mile in the air. The greeks defended it, as did the Arabs, who gave it its name (“castle of the oaks”). On the edge of the village lies the derelict monastery of San Pellegrino”, built near an ancient holy cave in the cliff, from where you can view the Necropoli that stud the mountaininside. All around are lofty views over mistshrouded valleys that are covered by flowers in the springtime.

The archeological park of Agrigento

The valley of the Temples is about 70 kilometres from Sciacca and belongs since 1997 to the world cultural heritage. It is one of the most popular places to visit and with its 1300 hectares, it is the largest archeological park in the world.

The archeological park of Selinunte

The beaches of the small harbor village “Marinella di Selinunte” are located in a remarkable position. Not far away is the archaeological park of Selinunte, one of the most beautiful and most representative of classical civilization (7th-6th century BC.). This Park is one of the largest in the world and is located in the middle of the large nature reserve around the River Belice.

The archeological park of Eraclea Minoa

In the front part of the Capo Bianco are still the relics of the Greek town of Eraclea Minoa. Particular importance belongs to the theater, which was created in a deepening of the hill, but unfortunately it is not good conditions. A small antiquarium contains objects which are mostly found in the Necopoli. On the way to the excavations, you will see the white sand dunes of the long beach of "Capo Bianco"!.

The archeological park of Heraclea Segesta

Segesta, called by the Greeks Egesta and by the Romans Segesta, was together with Erice and Entella one the most remarkable development centres of the Elymian civilization.Well-known is the famous theatre which is located on the northern slopes of Monte Barbaro. In the Valley of the theater just outside of the city rises the magnificent Doric temples that ennobles due to its location, the place where he stands.
